All Shapes and Sizes - Choosing the right dress for you

The female body comes in a variety of shapes and sizes - all of which, should be celebrated! However, sometimes it can be difficult to know what dress is right to show off all your favourite features. Don’t worry, we’ve got some tips to choose the right dress for you.

Pear-shaped (aka triangle shape)

You could be this body type if…

  • your waist is wider than your bust
  • you have a fuller bottom
  • your thighs are prominent
  •

Our top fashion tips for pear-shapes:

Start from the top - you want to add definition to your shoulders and even out the emphasis being placed from your waist downwards. That means choosing plunging V-necklines, scoop necks and fabulously dramatic sleeves.

Say yes to dresses - you have so many options when it comes to dresses. Basically, anything that accentuates your slender top half and creates a beautiful smooth balance with your fuller bottom half is ideal. That means open backs, long sleeves and maxi dresses.

    Hourglass-shaped (aka curvy)

You could be this body type if…

  • your waist is well-defined
  • your bust and hip-width are even
  • you would describe yourself as curvy
  •

    Our top tips for hourglass-shapes:

Keep it tight - when it comes to hourglass shapes, there is one general rule for showing off your body type - go fitted, fitted, fitted. You can celebrate your slimmer waist by accentuating this area and allowing your curves to speak for themselves!

Avoid flowy dresses - the only thing that could hamper your body shape is allowing it to be drowned by a loose flowing dress. The solution? Add a belt to create a cinched look. Alternatively, you could go for a bodycon or skater dress, which are more natural choices.

    Apple-shaped (aka inverted triangle)

You could be this body type if…

  • your shoulders are slightly broader than your hips
  • your waistline is less-defined
  • your hips and legs are narrow
  •

    Our top tips for apple-shapes:

Short-sleeves and cinched waists - short sleeves on a dress are perfect for an apple shape as this will minimise your shoulder width. Pair this with a dress that has a nipped-in waist for an exaggerated effect that will create a fabulously flattering figure.

Keep it mini to midi - showing off your legs as an apple shape is definitely the way to go, so choosing a nice mini or medium length on the hemline is perfect for creating a beautifully balanced figure.

    Rectangular-shaped (aka athletic)

You could be this body type if…

  • you’re not particularly curvy
  • your waistline is quite straight
  • your shoulder, waist and hip length are roughly the same
  •

    Our top tips for rectangular-shapes:

Shaping - when it comes to rectangular body shapes, you have a bit more choice: you can choose to use your dress style to create a more curvy figure or to show off your slender athletic shape.

Go strapless, fitted or cinched - if you’re looking to show off your slim straight body shape, opting for a strapless dress at the back or a fitted maxi dress is a no brainer. If you’re wanting to exaggerate your bust and waist, choose a dress with a plunging neckline that comes in tight around the waist.
