Winter Weekend Getaways in the UK

Planning a winter getaway in the UK is the perfect, more affordable way to holiday in the colder months of the year. It gives us something special and slightly festive to look forward to. Ideally, we all envision the White Winter Christmas we’ve seen in the likes of The Holiday, when Kate Winslet exchanges her gorgeous little cottage in Surrey for Cameron Diaz’s huge, modern house in LA accompanied by the perfect pool to lounge by. However, for those of us not going to LA this winter... we’re guiding you to the most picturesque areas of the UK where you’re bound to find a cosy cottage or hospitable hotel and forget all your worries for a long weekend. Singles, couples, families and canine companions, we have somewhere for everyone.

Bath, Somerset
Best for: Pretty cobblestone walks

In the heart and centre of Somerset, Bath is one of the most desired destinations to visit all year round. However, the winter adds something special to the honey-hued streets of which the beautiful River Avon passes through directly to the nearing city of Bristol. Perfect for Christmas shopping or browsing, it’s not only a sight-for-sore-eyes, but home to the thermae spas it’s so famously named after.

Bath

Brighton, East Sussex
Best for: Sea walks and cold swims

Only a 50-minute train ride on the Gatwick Express from London, Brighton is an easy and affordable weekend getaway for all. Busy, and full of tourists in the summer, the city in East Sussex is perfect for a colder winter staycay that bursts with highly rated restaurants, scenic sea walks (and swims for those who are brave enough), and cosy pubs perfect for the ultimate British-sea-side Fish and Chips.

Brighton

Cairngorms, The Scottish Highlands
Best for: Winter sports and Festive reindeer

Skiers and snowboarders at the ready, the Scottish Highlands is not only an attractive nature reserve, but consists of three valleys and several mountains that offers access to some of the best off-piste slopes. While you’re there, experience the festivities by visiting the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd that roams free around the mountains.

Cairngor

York, North Yorkshire
Best for: Medieval magic

Deep-rooted in history, comes the once Roman then Viking settlement of York. Distinctive for its grand cathedrals and bohemian spirit, York is a fabulous Christmas shopping or browsing destination for all, which is embedded by the warmth of the ancient walls. A great weekend hideaway in a quiet city, filled with inventive restaurants and ghost tours, it’s a no-brainer for us.

York

Woodstock, Cotswolds
Best for: Twinkling Christmas Markets

The highlight of the Christmas celebrations at the famous Blenheim Palace in the Cotswolds is one not to miss, as a festive light trail illuminates the woodland Laser Garden and the Water Terrace with 100,000 white bulbs. Perfect for gazing with a warm mulled wine or cider as you explore the grounds and finish off with toasting marshmallows around the fire pit.
